Michael Coleman and the Importance of Philanthropy
Philanthropy is the promotion of the welfare of others. Typically this is done by generous donations, both monetary and other products. As a dedicated philanthropist, Michael has helped various international organizations help those in need. From celebrity soccer matches to hosting events for BC Children’s Hospital. In this blog, Michael discusses what it means to give back to your community.
As society becomes more developed, its desire to help others in less fortunate situations increases. During the long and challenging efforts of achieving our own goals, the needs of others unable to achieve their own come to mind. One way in which communities and businesses have been able to successfully collaborate in tackling poor social conditions is through philanthropy. The results of philanthropy have made a difference in the lives of many, and continues to show how important of a role it plays worldwide.
Award winning Canadian actor, writer and producer, Michael Coleman, is passionate about more than just his career in the arts. Alongside a successful career in film, television and even teaching, Michael is involved in supporting various charities and organizations that help tackle social problems such as mental illness, bullying and disease. Michael’ s philanthropic efforts are proof of his desire to help improve lives. The following are points that show the benefits of philanthropy.
Michael Coleman on Creating Social Change
Philanthropy brings much needed change to communities, but it involves much more than just finances. It requires time, planning, dedication and effort.
Committing these attributes to a social cause will bring change to any social cause, and the number of causes that need this involvement are endless. As an advocate, contributor, and supporter of the BC Children’s Hospital in his home city of Vancouver, Michael has been able to draw attention to rare illnesses and attract more contributors to help children in need. This foundation is extra special to Michael as he was once a child living at the BC Children’s Hospital. Michael Coleman encourages everyone to find a cause close to their heart and become a lifelong advocate. Not only will you change the lives of others, but you will also gain a new found respect for the power of community.
Philanthropy and Personal Fulfillment
Many struggle with finding fulfillment in their daily lives. It can often feel like we are living in a haze; waking up, going to work, and coming home to sleep, only to do it all over again the next day. If you feel like this, you need to incorporate some philanthropic activities into your weekly routine. Nothing is more satisfying than helping others and creating positive change that benefits others. For example, Michael Coleman is involved with the BC Cancer Foundation, a charity committed to tackling cancer. Through various events, such as Ride to Conquer Cancer, the BC Cancer Foundation raises money for cancer research, awareness and treatments. The success of these events, and the foundation, highly depend on volunteers like Michael. Without their support and compassion, the BC Cancer Foundation would never reach their goal to break down cancer. Knowing that you are apart of such a powerful purpose is more than personally fulfilling!
Inspiring and Empowering Others
Philanthropy can do more than just bring positive change to lives. It can also help inspire people, both the people you are helping and others who see the impact your presence has. Michael Coleman works with the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre in Vancouver, a charity that focuses on providing non-judgemental assistance to women and children. This assistance includes meals, counselling, advocacy, and empowerment programs. Many of these services are made possible by the volunteers who generously donate their time, money, and energy. When you see how grateful the women and children are for having DEWC services, it inspires others to contribute to DEWC, whether it be as a volunteer, donator, or paid employee. Additionally, when services such as those provided by DEWC are supported by so many wonderful people, it makes the quality of the services increase, which in turn improves its effects on the individuals they serve. For example, women who have accessed DEWC services have reported feeling more empowered and inspired to lead a healthier life. Michael explains that there is no better feeling than when you see people directly benefiting from the services you have contributed to. Do not underestimate the inspiration and empowerment that can come from getting involved with philanthropy!
Increases productivity at work
As more individuals are getting involved in philanthropic efforts, companies have begun to incorporate philanthropy into their missions as both a marketing effort to attract consumers, as well as a way to give back to the communities that support them. This is called “Corporate Philanthropy”. For example, McDonald’s has their own charity, the Ronald McDonald House, which creates, finds, and supports programs that improve the health and well-being of children. Customers can donate to this charity at any time, with collection boxes located throughout ever restaurant. To further encourage donations to this charity, McDonalds hosts an annual McHappy Day, an event where $1 from specific meal purchases is donated to the Ronald McDonald House. Not only do these efforts attract customers, they also make employees more dedicated, increasing productivity, as they know their hard work is going to help others. Of course high wages and employee benefits are a great incentive in the workplace, employees need more than just a paycheque to feel satisfied with their lives.
Encourages involvement of community
Attitudes are contagious. Being around an individual that is excited and enthusiastic about philanthropy will encourage others to become involved. When people can see the change that comes from your efforts, it can encourage them to help you. People that desire change do not always know how to carry it out. All it takes is the effort of one person to encourage a whole community to push for change. Make your community a better place by helping others and advocating for those who do not have a voice. As Michael Coleman shows, using your platform to better the lives of others is rewarding in so many ways, to so many people!
